Single, Two Or Three Phase Variable Transformer For Power Variation

Single, two and three phase transformers

Although the voltage regulating transformers share a number of characteristics there are also a number of variations which help to make the most of the transformer rating.

In its simplest form, the voltage regulating transformer can be fitted with a single pick up brush system. This moves over the conductor track of the column of turns and draws off the voltage and hence load current.

If one has, for example, a column with 230 Volts across it and capacity of 20 Amps, then this may be used in an application to supply 0 to 230 volts at load ratings up to 20 Amps.

A simple addition of the second set of pick up brushes and gear on the opposite side of the column of turns increases the capacity to +/-230 Volts at load ratings of up to 20 Amps. This effectively doubles the capacity of the same column of turns so more output for nearly the same cost.

In such an arrangement one may start with a voltage of 230 Volts in one polarity. Moving the pickup brushes along the column the output voltage goes from 230 Volts in one polarity reduces down through zero voltage and the reverse polarity and again increases to the voltage of 230 volts.

Other voltages and current ratings are available as are the number of phases and columns which make up those phases.

Test Load Banks

test load banks

While it is very desirable to have the facility to set your supply voltage to whatever level you require, it is equally desirable, if not more so, to be able to vary your applied test loading in the same controllable manner.

The solution may be as simple as supplying a loading reactor or capacitor via a voltage regulating transformer so that a variable kVAr load can be applied. However, it may be something far more complex with variable inductors, capacitor and resistive load all controlled from one central point or from the control system.

Test Power Supplies

Test Power Supply

The variability of the voltage regulating transformers makes them ideal for inclusion in test power supply setups.

The lack of waveform distortion and fine control mean that the exact conditions required can be supplied.

Whether providing a buck/boost system working around the available supply voltage or for full range variation and safe starting a system of a voltage regulating transformer, a fixed ratio transformers and a control can be provided to suit your specific application.
